Congratulations Ray Schuck!

Former Allen County Museum Director and Ohio Northern University History Professor, Ray Schuck, Honored with Individual Achievement Award

  Recently retired ONU History and Museum Studies Professor, Ray Schuck, was recognized with an Individual Achievement Award at the Awards Luncheon of the annual conference of the Ohio Local History Alliance on Saturday, October 6, 2018 in Dublin, Ohio. Individual Achievement Awards recognize people who have made outstanding contributions to Ohio’s historical societies or history museums or to the understanding and appreciation of state or local history.


     Schuck, who was described as one of the most beloved professors at Ohio Northern University, retired in May 2018. During his 18 years at ONU, Professor Schuck developed the Public History and Museum Studies Program which included the archaeology field school held at ONU’s Metzger Nature Center in Stone Creek, Ohio. Schuck was three times awarded the Outstanding Teaching Faculty Award and taught and trained dozens of students in the field of public history with many going on to fill museum positions across the country. His students assisted with numerous local history projects in the area, including the recent documentation of the names, ranks, and units of 81 Ada, Ohio Civil War veterans to assist in creating a Civil War Memorial. In addition to his teaching, Schuck was the rugby coach and adviser.


     Prior to joining the faculty at ONU, Ray was the Curator and Director of the Allen County Museum in Lima, Ohio from 1975 to 2000. He shepherded the Museum through its initial accreditation with the American Association of Museums and two subsequent re-accreditations. He served on the boards of the Ohio Museums Association, Ohio Archivists Society, and the Ohio Academy of History. In 1990, Ray worked with the Ohio Historical Society to create and produce the “Lima - Allen County” exhibition at the Ohio Historical Center. Schuck was involved with numerous local history commemorations, archaeological digs, and is fondly remembered for his numerous radio interviews on “It’s Happening with VaLaire” - WIMA.


     The Ohio Local History Alliance works to advance the field of local history in Ohio through education, advocacy, and collaboration, and represents over 300 member organizations. Schuck’s award was nominated by the Allen County Historical Society.
