Position Title:  Curatorial Assistant

Position Summary:

The Allen County Museum is seeking a part-time Curatorial Assistant to support the curatorial department.  The Curatorial Assistant is a member of the Allen County Museum’s curatorial team and is responsible for collections care, research, and exhibition maintenance and development. Additionally, the Curatorial Assistant works collaboratively with staff to meet the day-to-day needs of the organization.  The Curatorial Assistant reports to the Director of Curatorial Affairs. This position is a part-time role with a salary of $14,560.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Collections Processing & Care (55% of the time)

  • Process collections, including inventorying, labeling, cataloging, rehousing, and digitizing

  • Update PastPerfect with artifact information

  • Prepare monthly reports on environmental readings

  • Clean, rehouse, and organize artifacts (20% of position)

 

Exhibition maintenance, development, fabrication (25% of the time)

  • Assist in the development, installation, de-installation, and maintenance of physical and online exhibits, such as preparing artifacts for display, creating exhibit elements and panels, and digitizing items

 

Collections Research and Outreach (20% of the time)

  • Assist in research for exhibits, online content, and patron research requests

  • Prepare database entries for online access

  • Assist in online outreach through updating website and social media

 

Requirements:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in museum studies, public history, history, or another appropriate field desired with up to 2 years of work experience.  Internships will be considered part of professional experience. Curatorial Assistant should be able to lift up to 30 pounds and have the ability to wear a respirator. Depending on the project, the Curatorial Assistant may be sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

 

Other Skills:

 

  • A passion for local history, American history, historic homes, museums, and collections care.

  • Basic understanding of museum best practices and operations

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written

  • Hands-on attitude; basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment

  • Detail-oriented; proactive, creative problem-solver

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team

  • Knowledge of PastPerfect, a plus

  • Experience in using Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements, Microsoft Publisher and Excel, basic website editing, a plus

Job Title:  Part Time Custodian. (Mornings up to 15 hours per week)

 

Purpose: 

To assist in presenting a clean and attractive environment for visitors of the Museum.

Essential Responsibilities:  

The successful candidate is expected to be a self-starter, have good time management, be able to work independently, and follow the Museum's standards for safety and conduct.

  • Follow COVID-19 guidelines and prioritize frequent cleaning and disinfecting of high touch points, common areas and restrooms as needed.

  • Empty wastebaskets.

  • Clean restrooms.

  • Clean glass throughout the facility and exhibits.

  • Dust and sweep.

  • Assist in setup/takedown for events and meetings. 

  • Other miscellaneous duties as needed.

Desired Education  and Experience:

Must be a high school graduate.  Must be able to pass a background check.
