to the Ohio River and then took the

to his new residence near
Delphos
,
Ohio
. He brought
with him his wife, five children, and this piano.
John took up farming but he also taught astronomy,
mathematics, entomology, and his first love, music.
He was
Allen
County

This Balthauser-Vierheller Piano was
made in
Darmstadt
in 1839. It
has 73 keys instead of 88, and a knee lever, rather than a
foot pedal, operates its dampers.
What other types of musical
